SUBJECT: The history behind this 1933 bottle of wine is both intriguing and mysterious. The main label clearly shows the French influence over wine production in Palestine at that time. The wine is described as “Chablis” although modern conventions restrict use of this branding to wines from a specific region of France. At the bottom of the label there is a feint inscription (not visible in the painting) which appears to say “Bottled by Carmel Oriental Jaffa”.  Carmel Winery, now the largest winery in Israel, was established in 1882 by Baron Edmond de Rothschild from the French branch of the Rothschild family - owners of the famous Chateau Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux. Carmel Oriental was the brand marketed within the Ottoman Empire after 1901. The wines were produced at the wineries of Rishon le Zion and Zichron Ya'acov (where Carmel still produce their wine) and were sent in barrels to the branches to be bottled, a system employed universally at that time. Jaffa was one of the main branches in Palestine and Jerusalem was the other. What the initials “N.Z.” mean and why the unique reference “№ 101973” is printed on the side is still a mystery.
